Description of organisation

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is one of the leading organisations for applied research in Europe. It is undertaking contract research on behalf of industry, the service sector and the government, executed through 59 Institutes, with an annual research budget of 1.7 billion Euros.

The main focus of Fraunhofer INT is the support of the German Federal Ministry of Defence in the field of defence research and technology (R&T). INT provides technical expertise and scientific support for the R&T planning process and the development of the R&T strategy of the armaments branch of the German MoD, taking into account administrative and structural guidelines, organization and future orientation of the German Industry as well as aspects of international R&T collaboration (LoI-EDIR-FA, European Defence Agency (EDA), NATO).

In the recent years Fraunhofer INT increasingly is engaging in the sector of civil security. Having already participated in ESRAB (European Security Research Advisory Board), Fraunhofer INT was also strongly contributing to ESRIF (European Security Research and Innovation Forum) as participant of the working groups on 'Innovation' ,  'CBRN',  'Foresight & Scenarios', and as the Sherpa of German-lead working group on 'Crisis Management'.

Previous experience relevant to the tasks

  • Management and coordination of ESRIF WG4 'Crisis Management' 2008-2009
  • Organisation of workshops, predominantly on national level (MoD, scenario building, asymmetric threats, nuclear weapons etc.)
  • Participation in FP7-SEC projects DEMASST (Demo phase I; roadmapping activity), CRESCENDO (roadmapping) and DECOTESCC1 (Demo phase I)
  • Participation in national civil security experts group
